KUMDO – Korean art of the Sport Sword
KUMBUB – Korean art of the Real Sword

Kumdo is an ancient Korean martial art dating back hundreds of years. The word "Kumdo" means- the art of the sword. The "Sport" sword refers to the competition side of this martial art. In many other martial arts and sports a persons general size and strength inevitably lead to either an advantage or possibly a disadvantage during competition. In Kumdo the difference between victory and loss is based much more on a person's strength of spirit and their preparedness of mind. In other martial arts and sports a person can take a blow or be knocked down only to rise to compete or fight again, even possibly winning the match. In Kumdo when a person is struck with a sword there is no opportunity to rise and fight again, the battle is over and the outcome decided.

In this way a persons state of mind and spirit are much more emphasized; one slip of concentration or lack of conviction during competition can easily lead to a loss While physical training and attention to the details of the different techniques in Kumdo are of obvious importance and should not be overlooked. It is important to note that regardless of physical effort it is seriousness of attitude and proper etiquette during the class that should easily be considered the two most important aspects of training.

Students can gain much together when they are practicing actively for competition or simply enjoying the process of training. Kumdo will always act as a guide to the students that take the time to learn all of the aspects of this martial art. Continual character growth and development both as a martial artist and a person are essential to success in and out of the sparring ring.
